What changes when you convert WEBM to GIF
Short, small and silent by default
A GIF grows very quickly with length and frame size, so the defaults are deliberately conservative: 15 frames per second, 480 pixels tall, and the first 30 seconds of the clip. All three are adjustable, and the export is capped at a minute. The audio track is dropped — GIF has no way to carry sound at all, which is the usual reason people are surprised by the result.
A palette is built for your clip
Rather than reduce every frame to a fixed set of colours, the encoder analyses your footage first, builds a 256-colour palette that suits it, and then applies that palette with dithering to soften the banding. It is the difference between a GIF that looks acceptable and one that looks like it came from 1998. It also means a clip with one dominant colour scheme converts far better than one that cuts between very different scenes.
A video becomes an animation
The motion survives, but GIF is a far blunter instrument than video: it has no sound, and its 256-colour palette shows as banding on anything filmed. Expect the result to be larger than the WEBM it came from, despite looking worse — which is why short clips work and long ones do not.
